Well-known for her roles in such Giuseppe Verdi operas as Il Trovatore, La forza del destino, and Aida, this Croatian-born soprano had an extended career at New York’s Metropolitan Opera. Also a vocalist of sacred music, she was a soloist in Verdi’s Requiem and Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis. After trained in Croatia, Italy, and Germany, the twenty-one-year-old Milanov sang the business lead soprano part of Leonora inside a Slovenian staging of Verdi’s Il Trovatore. She was, at one stage, romantically associated with long term Yugoslav chief executive Josip Broz Tito. Created Zinka Kunc in Zagreb, Croatia, she later on assumed the stage name of Zinka Milanov and resolved in NEW YORK. She was wedded many times; her third relationship was to a Yugoslav diplomat called Ljubomir Ilic. The popular mezzo-soprano Regina Resnik was among Milanov’s many vocal pupils.
