African-American poet and Pulitzer Prize recipient whose functions include Copacetic and I AM SORRY for the Eyes in my own Head. The previous collection is proclaimed with the rhythms of jazz music; the latter received the SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA Poetry Award. He was among five children delivered to a Louisiana carpenter. He fought in the Vietnam Battle before their studies at the School of Colorado. He trained at Indiana School, Princeton School, New York School, and the School of New Orleans. He was wedded to writer Mandy Sayer for a decade and later acquired a kid with poet Reetika Vazirani. Tragically, Vazirani wiped out herself as well as the couple’s kid in 2003. He and Philip Levine had been both recipients from the Pulitzer Award for Poetry through the 1990s.
