Served as a co-employee justice from the U.S. Supreme Courtroom from 1939 to 1975. He went to Whitman University in Walla Walla, Washington, on the scholarship or grant. He was among the youngest justices to serve over the Supreme Courtroom. He wedded his 4th wife, Cathleen Heffernan, in 1966. He was nominated towards the Supreme Courtroom by Leader Franklin D. Roosevelt.
