He originally went to and graduated from Calvin University, that was an offshoot of his family’s denomination the Christian Reformed Cathedral. He performed a pivotal function in fighting for educational freedom through the 1950s Crimson Scare when Joseph McCarthy was seeking to purge Communists from all areas of American lifestyle. His mother passed on when he was nine. His dad was a farmer and a politician. He wedded Sadie Roelfs in 1934, plus they remained wedded for 44 years.
