Biography
Appreciated for fighting for the legal rights of fellow African Canadians by refusing to retreat to a segregated part of Nova Scotia’s Roseland Theatre, she actually is also appreciated for building a beauty classes catering towards the needs of black colored women and for introducing a successful cosmetics line for girls of African descent. In her early years, she went to beauty academic institutions in NY, Montreal, and Atlantic Town. She was fined and briefly jailed on her behalf rightfully defiant action; after her loss of life, she was officially pardoned with the Canadian federal government. She and her fourteen siblings was raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia, as the kids of Gwendolin and Adam Davis. She afterwards married Jack port Desmond. She’s often been in comparison to American Civil Privileges activist Rosa Parks, who famously refused to stop a seat on the Montgomery, Alabama bus. Desmond’s action in fact preceded Parks’ by almost a decade.
