11 |
A few weeks after her notorious Saturday Night Live appearance, she appeared at a benefit concert with Kris Kristofferson. When her name was announced, the crowd responded with what appeared to be a dead-even split between cheering and booing. Due to this rare reaction, she immediately scrapped her scheduled song (the keyboardist started playing and she waved for him to stop, which he did) and sang "War" again (the song she sang on SNL), then left the stage and broke down crying in Kristofferson's arms. |
12 |
Was ordained as a Latin Tridentine Church priest by a rebel bishop; her adopted religious name was Mother Bernadette Mary. |
13 |
Retired from music in 2003 to raise her three children, but announced in February 2005 that she was returning to the business. |
14 |

16 |
Ranked #35 on VH1's 100 Greatest Women of Rock N Roll |
17 |
When she won a Grammy in the Best Alternative Music Performance category for "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got" (1990), she refused to accept it making her the first recording artist to rebuff N.A.R.A.S. Thus, the title of the song became somewhat prophetic |
18 |
Once worked as a "Kiss-O-Gram" girl in Dublin. |
19 |
Caused a huge international stir when she tore up a photograph of Pope John Paul II, live, on Saturday Night Live (1975) (on October 3, 1992), while shouting "Fight the true evil!" after singing an a capella version of Bob Marley's "War". Almost immediately, NBC received over a thousand phone calls with complaints. NBC, to this day, refuses to ever reair the incident, and all subsequent reruns of that show have a pre-show recording of her singing the song. |
20 |
She made news in 1990 when she announced she would refuse to go onstage at the Garden State Arts Center in New Jersey if "The Star Spangled Banner" was performed. The venue heeded her demand. |
21 |

[on remarrying therapist Barry Herridge] Since no woman on earth could not adore a man that treats her like a goddess and loves her like a slut. |
2 |
All what we know as rock and pop music came from blues when you trace it back, it's history came from blues and in its time blues was pretty much like rap in so far as it had the same format which meant anybody could write a song. It wasn't too complicated, it was 12 bars, you had three verses, the first three lines were the same, the last line was different, you had a bridge. |
3 |
A writer is the perfect boyfriend, they have lots of time to snuggle and a desk to bend you over. |
4 |
[on her time in school in Ireland] I remember being in Sion Hill in Blackrock and this old nun walked into the room and drew this enormous big hard dick - in one continuous sweep of the chalk - and we fell on the floor clutching ourselves laughing. We had never even seen a dick that didn't belong to our brothers. Why did she do it? And how did a nun know how to draw such an accurate looking penis, balls and all? Anyway, that was the limit of my sex education. |
5 |
I'm not a musical snob. 'Ooo Baby Baby' or whatever - those are as valid as 'Working Class Hero' or 'Imagine'. But there are times artists do need to stand up and not just be entertainers. 'V.I.P', the song, was about Irish artists being silent on the matter of the church reports [on child abuse by priests]. But it translates. The priorities have gone askew. If the rappers and the rock stars are having dinner with the President, that's a problem. |
6 |
[observation, 2013] The music business is corrupt. It's full of nothing but vampires and pimps. What was more important that came out of the Miley [Cyrus] thing was being able to conversate about mental health and human rights. The two of us, without meaning it, did quite a good job. |
