Biography

Jazz drummer who have spent some time working with performers including Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges. He was motivated to try out the drums young, as his dad and uncles had been drummers. He proved helpful being a bandleader on a lot more than forty albums and was a sideman on albums for performers like Artwork Pepper. He was wedded to Florence Butterfield for a lot more than forty years. He spent some time working with John Coltrane.

1The leading percussionist on film and TV soundtracks of the 1950's and 60's, Manne enjoyed a particularly fruitful collaboration with the composer Henry Mancini.
2A key figure in the West Coast-based 'cool' jazz movement of the 1950's.
3Opened his own nightclub, Shelly's Manne-Hole in Los Angeles on North Cahuenga Boulevard in 1960. It remained in operation until 1973.
4Member of the Stan Kenton Orchestra from 1946 to 1952. Around the same period also worked with Shorty Rogers, George Shearing, Woody Herman and at Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse Cafe on Hermosa Beach.

6Inducted into the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame in 1997.
