Biography

Among the initial black musicians to be always a regular person in a commercial saving studio. He began using the Lester and Lee Small music group in the 1940s and created his personal trio. He rejected the opportunity to use Duke Ellington’s Orchestra. He was wedded to his wife Mary Lou for twenty-one years; they elevated three daughters. He used Charles Mingus in the 1964 Monterey Jazz Event.
