Biography

Anthropologist who also headed the Bureau of Indian Affairs beneath the Kennedy and Johnson administrations and advised them on minority affairs. A Democrat, he was also the 33rd Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin from 1959 to 1961. He spent a 12 months with an Indian booking within the doctoral dissertation, and got associated with any office of War info, working on issues of minorities inside the equipped solutions. As the unique associate for minority affairs under Truman, he fought for equality in employing practices, which resulted in him becoming accused of communist sympathies by Senator Joseph R. McCarthy.
