He was a sickly kid who continuously battled respiratory attacks. He was inducted in to the Louisiana Music Hall of Popularity in March 2007. He previously three children called Kevin, Jeffrey, and Dahra. He previously an agreeable rivalry with trumpeter Al Hirt.
