African-American singer and actress who received a Tony Award on her behalf performance within an all-black Broadway production of Hi there, Dolly! Her additional Broadway credits consist of House of Plants and St. Louis Female. She started her carrying out arts career like a Philadelphia-based nightclub vocalist and a United Support Businesses (USO) touring vocalist. Her film credits consist of functions in Porgy & Bess, Isn’t It Passionate?, and St. Louis Blues. Her sibling, Bill Bailey, experienced a career like a faucet dancer. Her second spouse, Louie Bellson, was a jazz percussionist. Her single night club shows were accompanied by musical collaborations with Cab Calloway and additional entertainers.

1In the 1980s, she was the spokeswomen for Duncan Hines Cookies.
2Was a staunch conservative Republican.
3Her brother was also an entertainer, Bill Bailey (1912-1978). He is generally credited with being the first to perform the "moonwalk" dance step on film in the classic musical Cabin in the Sky (1943), which starred Eddie 'Rochester' Anderson, Ethel Waters and Lena Horne.
4She was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Recording at 7080 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California.
5According to her daughter Dee Dee Belson, she was highly amused by Garrett Morris playing her in drag on Saturday Night Live (1975).
