Leader from the Bulgarian Orthodox Cathedral who all led his country’s Christian community in the communist period into democracy. He was raised beneath the communist routine that prohibited or co-opted spiritual organizations. Following the fall from the Soviet Union, he encountered a revolt in his very own church by those that believed he was a federal government figurehead. He was created within a hill community in north-central Bulgaria. He hosted Pope John Paul II in 2002, re-establishing ties using the Catholic Cathedral.
