Biography

Famous Chilean poet, diplomat, and Nobel Prize winner. His literary functions are the surrealistic poetry collection Residencia en la Tierra as well as the book El habitante con su esperanza. He examined French on the Universidad de Chile and originally planned to become teacher. He often composed his poetry in green printer ink, as he regarded green to become his color of wish. His mom, Rosa Basoalto, passed away within 8 weeks of his delivery. He was wedded 3 x, to Maryka Antonieta Hagenaar Vogelzang, Matilde Urrutia and Delia del Carril. He previously a daughter called Malva. He received the 1953 Stalin Tranquility Award and was an ardent supporter of Joseph Stalin until he discovered from the Soviet dictator’s Great Purges.

1Adopted the pen name Pablo Neruda as a tribute to Czech writer and poet Jan Neruda (1834-1891).
2Kenneth Rexroth's translation of Neruda's 1955 poem "Brown and Agile Child" is shown on the back cover of Jackson Browne's 1976 album "The Pretender".
3The love poetry Patch Adams (Robin Williams) reads to Corinne Fisher (Monica Potter) in Patch Adams (1998) was from Neruda's "100 Love Sonnets : Cien sonetos de amor".

5Federico García Lorca was a primary influence on his style. The two poets were close friends up until Lorca's execution during the Spanish Civil War.
6Colombian novelist Gabriel García Márquez considers him the greatest poet of the 20th century in any language. Mexican poet Octavio Paz considered Neruda "a servant of fascism".
