Ousmane Sembene

Senegalese author and film director whose masterpiece novel, God’s Items of Solid wood, was motivated by real-life events. His later on, politically-themed works are the Last from the Empire and Niiwam and Taaw. He was drafted in to the Senegalese corps from the French Military, and he fought in Globe Battle II. He received a exclusive award in the 1979 Moscow International Film Event. The son of the fisherman, he grew up mainly by his maternal grandmother. He and civil privileges leader Dorothy Day time were both focused on social change.
