Musician known for his wide-ranging, diverse repertoire as well as for his advocacy of songs and composers. He obtained acclaim for tying with Edith Chen in the 1993 International Single Piano Competition, that was founded by Croatian pianist Ivo Pogorelić. He garnered crucial acclaim for his shows and recordings of composer Olivier Messiaen’s oeuvre. He partnered along with his sister, pianist Bernadette Harvey-Balkus, in 1998 for any two-piano ensemble they known as Australian Virtuosi. He also premiered many worldwide composers and their functions in Australia, including Milton Babbitt.
