Academy Award-winning composer most widely known for composing the music to Popularity, the 1980 film vintage starring Irene Cara. He and lyricist Dean Pitchford received the 1981 Oscar for Greatest Original Track. His focus on Carrie-The Musical with lyricist Lynn Ahrens obtained notoriety not really much for the tunes themselves but also for the infamous flop that this musical predicated on Stephen King’s book was. He also done Pretty in Red from 1986, Superstar from 1999, as well as the Butcher’s Wife from 1991. He grew up in Brooklyn. His more youthful sibling Lesley Gore became a well-known vocalist and songwriter. He published music for Conditions of Endearment and Broadcast Information, both films by Wayne L. Brooks.
