Marva Collins

Chicago teacher who founded the Westside Preparatory College and enriched the lives of inner-city students. She utilized traditional educational ideas–notably, the Socratic method–while teaching inner-city children. She graduated from Clark University in Atlanta, Georgia. She set up her low-cost preparatory college in order to provide a correct education for poverty-stricken, African-American kids who was simply labeled (frequently wrongly) as “learning impaired” by the general public school program. Her little girl, Cynthia B. Collins, also became a instructor. She was portrayed by celebrity Cicely Tyson in the 1981 tv film The Marva Collins Tale.
