Biography

Television presenter, article writer and journalist who’s most known for hosting the favorite quiz plan Mastermind. He was raised in Edinburgh, where his dad was the Icelandic counsel, and he went to the Edinburgh Academy where he was an integral part of the marching brass music group. Mastermind was the longest working quiz present from 1972 to 1997, and the favorite catchphrase on that present was “I’ve began, so I’ll surface finish.” He was wedded to Mamie Bird, and both had a kid called Siggi who passed away tragically in 1973. He and Clive Anderson both hosted the quiz display Mastermind.

1Father of Jon Magnusson (producer of Graham Norton's television shows).
2He was a prolific author, writing books on archaeology, the Vikings, Scotland and Ireland, and translations of early Icelandic literature.
3After joining the BBC, he was a presenter on many different programs, reflecting his interests in history, archaeology, and the environment. His interest in ornithology started in his youth; when he was 14, he won a medal from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds for his essay on the mating habits of the blackbird. Four decades later, he became president of the RSPB.
4Children: Siggy, Sally, Margaret, Anna and Jon.

6Attended Jesus College, Oxford, of which he became an Honorary Fellow in 1990.
