I'm not a perfect person, I have my warts. I sometimes say things that get me in trouble. I wear suits that are cheap. But I say what I think and I believe what I say, and I'm willing to say things that are not popular but ordinary people know are right.
You're going to find out that, to my detriment and credit, I don't often think about the political consequences of what I say.
The definition of a gaffe in Washington is when somebody tells the truth but shouldn't have.
on his wife Judith's career] I don't think the press is going to be that interested in her hemlines because I don't think she's going to do a whole lot of interviews with people interested in her hemlines.
[Saddam Hussein] is a bad person and we are all better off with him in captivity, but you should know that my views on Iraq have not changed one bit. Some people said "Oh, Saddam Hussein, he's caught, now the whole campaign's going to go away". I don't think so.
[on his time at Britain's Felsted public school] It was a great experience, but I found the restrictive reputation of English public schools to be well-earned, I enjoyed the English dry sense of humor, but a British public school is pretty cruel and the rules are strict.
[on Felsted's dress code] The idea that we had to wear a coat and tie outside chapel, meals and periods struck me as being much more formed than the usual attire of the St. Georgian, who could be seen most afternoons walking round in jeans, bare feet and a cast-off rugger vest".
Having now experienced a true dormitory for the first time, I have found that they are preferable because it is possible to make friends with a greater number of people.
What made the strongest impression at Feldsted was the Music School and the number of people that use it. While St. George's had a good choir, we had no school orchestra at all. One must think twice when a school does not have any form of encouragement to music.
