Canadian-born actor who became a favorite character actor, playing Norwegians, Swedes and additional Scandinavians in 1930’s films. After showing up in John Ford’s 1931 film, Arrowsmith, he joined the director’s stock options company, appearing in main supporting tasks in the Searchers and THE PERSON Who also Shot Liberty Valance. He received a scholarship or grant to Northwestern University or college, which led him to Broadway, where he produced his breakthrough part like a Swedish janitor. He performed Muley in the 1940 film version from the Grapes of Wrath. He was created Johan Kvalen in Vancouver, English Columbia. His dad was a Norwegian immigrant who transformed the family members name to Qualen. He used a Midwestern accent in Howard Hawks’ humor film, His Woman Friday.
