Jimmy Knepper

Flexible jazz trombonist who performed with Charles Mingus and various other jazz greats. He started executing in his middle teens, hanging out with Charlie Barnet, Woody Herman, and Claude Thornhill before signing up for Mingus at age group 30. He performed numerous bands more than a career spanning years, but his contribution to Mingus’ The Clown and Tijuana Moods albums set up his popularity for originality. His wife Maxine was also a jazz musician, playing the trumpet. Though creatively satisfying, his stormy five-year cooperation with Charles Mingus finished after a disagreement over royalties erupted into Mingus’s slapping him and breaking his teeth.
