Biography

British opera singer known on her behalf extreme performances of iconic roles like this of Dido in Les Troyens. She received lots of the industry’s most renowned awards, like the Yellow metal Medal from the Royal Philharmonic Culture, during the period of her famous three decade-long profession. She worked well at a standard bank prior to making her stage debut with Oxford University’s Opera Golf club in 1956. Pursuing her retirement through the stage, she offered as the Chancellor from the College or university of York from 1991 to 2004. She wedded Wayne Keith Shelley in 1957. Her old brother, Peter, passed away due to a center condition when she was a decade older. She released a collaborative dual recording with acclaimed pianist Gerald Moore which contains forty-two songs.

1She was awarded the C.B.E. (Commander of the Order of the British Empire), Damehood in 1976, and Companion of Honor in 1994 for her services to music.
2Famous for singing roles origionally done by Castrati. Castrati were male singers who were castrated before puberty so that their voices wouldn't change. The Castrati sound combined the purity of a boy's voice, with the lung power and control of a full-grown male voice. Because this practice has been outlawed, today only women can sing in the range of a castrato role. Baker specialized in this type of role and became very famous for it.
