Winner from the 1922 Indianapolis 500 was also the initial American drivers to get the Grand Prix. He started as a driving mechanic, when race cars required both a drivers and a technicians man. He received the 1921 French Grand Prix despite some rather severe serious accidental injuries he suffered simply week before in an exercise incident. His parents, both Irish immigrants, possessed a shop on Mission Road, behind the house. He participated in the 1923 Grand Prix in Italy, grand marshalled by Benito Mussolini.
