James A. Porter

American scholar and artist who helped to determine the field of African-American art background. He began his profession by studying sketching and painting at Howard University or college. He continued to review at New York’s Artwork Institute with Paris’ Sorbonne and lastly received his M.A. in artwork history from NY University or college. His 1943 publication, “Contemporary Negro Artwork,” was the 1st comprehensive study of African-American artwork. He was wedded to Dorothy Burnett, with whom he previously a child. He and Willard Hughes Rollings had been both prominent scholars.
