Delaware-born geologist and mollusc shell professional. His assortment of freshwater bivalve mussels was shown at Washington, D.C.’s Smithsonian Organization. He was the co-owner of the Philadelphia publishing home. In 1860, he became Chief executive from the American Association for the Advancement of Technology. He wedded Frances Anne Carey in 1821. Their boy, Henry (created in 1825), continued to be an American historian and politics activist. He was a modern of fellow geologist Charles Lyell.
