American seismologist most widely known for his work learning earthquakes in the deep Pacific ocean. He went to Pomona University and worked on the Support Wilson Observatory before shifting to the Seismological Lab at California Institute of Technology. He designed several important earthquake musical instruments like the Benioff seismograph, which senses motion in the planet earth. He was created in LA, California. He was elected towards the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, as was astronomer Gerald Neugebauer.
