Symbolist painter most widely known for “The Kiss” and additional erotic, passionate works. He was especially focused on the feminine body and became among the most important proponents from the Vienna Secession motion. He went to the Vienna College of Arts and Crafts, where he analyzed architectural painting. He graduated in 1883. He was profoundly affected by Vienna’s famous background painter Hans Makart. He was granted the 1888 Golden Purchase of Merit for his painting of murals in Vienna’s Burgtheater. He was among seven children given birth to to Anna Finster Klimt as well as the precious metal engraver, Ernst Klimt the Elder. He is at a long-term collaboration with Emilie Louise Flöge, but historians had been uncertain if their romantic relationship was actually intimate. He fathered 14 kids by a number of ladies. He was affected by Vincent Vehicle Gogh.
|1||Industrialist Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer commissioned Klimt to paint five works, including two portraits of his wife, Adele Bloch-Bauer. "Adele Bloch-Bauer I" (1907) made her a celebrity. The works were seized by the Nazis when they annexed Austria in 1938. It wasn't until 2006 that Austria gave the works to Adele's niece Maria Altmann after a seven year legal battle. Maria sold "Adele Bloch-Bauer I" to Ronald Lauder for a then-record $135 million. The case is the basis of the film Woman in Gold (2015).|
