On Saturday, January 5, 1991 Gary McLarty was arrested in the fatal shooting of Donald Louis Deppe, a 50 year old ex-convict from North Hollywood. McLarty was cleared of all charges when the Deputy District Attorney determined that it was a clear case of justifiable homicide. On the Friday before as part of a bizarre series of events another man had been fatally shot by Sheriff's deputies at McLarty's Lake View Terrace ranch. McLarty reported to authorities that he suspected the man he shot of sexually assaulting a family friend. McLarty stated that he feared for his life because Deppe had a history of violent assaults.
Gary McLarty was called upon to testify at the murder trial for Robert Blake. Blake had been accused of approaching McLarty with an offer of $10,000 to murder his wife in 2001. He told the court that Blake suggested he "pop" his wife while she slept. McLarty testified that he turned Blake down. He said that Blake then approached another stuntman. Blake was thought by most to be the actual murderer, but was acquitted in a 2005 criminal trial. In a 2008 civil trial Blake was ordered to pay the victim's family $30 million. That was reduced initially to $15 million by the appeals court, and reportedly was ultimately settled out of court in 2013 for $2 million.
Defense lawyer Gerald Schwartzbach revealed McLarty was hospitalized in a psych ward (Fall, 2004) before Blake's trial for extreme paranoia that caused him to crawl "a mile on his belly" to escape cops he fantasized were after him. This revelation came on the heels of McLarty's son, Cole, telling authorities that his father told him that Blake only talked to him about roughing up or punching out some guys who were stalking him. Cole also reported that his father's hallucinations were brought on by heavy cocaine use, a fact that McLarty acknowledged previously when he was on the stand.
His son Cole McLarty is also a stuntman.
He was in the helicopter, as a stunt coordinator, when actor Vic Morrow and two children died in an accident on a "Twilight Zone" movie set.
