After retiring from performing, he wrote several well-received fiction functions, and was the dilemma critic for the LA Herald-Examiner. His grandfather, Donald McKay constructed clipper ships found in record breaking voyages. Seriously interested in his second profession, he rejected an opportunity to co-star contrary Marilyn Monroe within the film, Something’s Surely got to Give, to spotlight his writing.
