Francis Legatt Chantrey

British sculptor who became the best portrait sculptor in Regency Britain by sculpting busts of several significant figures. He worked well like a grocer and apprenticed like a solid wood carver. He started his sculptures by causing two life-sized drawings of his sitter’s mind, one at once and something in profile. He wedded his cousin Mary Ann Wale in 1809. He produced a popular statue of John Dalton.
