Biography

An American author and publisher, he’s most widely known for his works of children’s fiction. He developed such popular youthful adult series as The Rover Guys, Tom Swift, The Hardy Guys, and Nancy Drew. He founded the Stratemeyer Syndicate in 1906. The business allowed for the fast writing and submitting of several juvenile serial books. He marketed a lot more than 500 million copies of his 1,300-plus books. He was raised in NJ and later wedded Magdalene Truck Camp. He and Arthur Scott Bailey both had written children’s books.

1Son of a German immigrant, he wrote an estimated 160 books under his many pseudonyms (which include Oliver Optic and Horatio Algers, Jr.), perhaps 60 under his own name, and outlined stories for about 800 more.
2Father of the popular novelist 'Harriet Adams', who wrote under the name Carolyn Keene, a pseudonym for the many authors who have contributed to the Nancy Drew series.
