Earl Hamner Jr.

Biography

Most widely known for creating and narrating The Waltons, a tv series predicated on his 1961 book Spencer’s Hill, this Virginia-born writer also penned several episodes from the Twilight Area and wrote the screenplays for such movies and cleaning soap operas as Hand Springs Weekend and Falcon Crest. He released his first book, Fifty Highways to City, in 1953. Though most widely known for The Waltons and Falcon Crest, he also produced two additional, shorter-lived tv series: Boone and Apple’s Method. He was raised in Nelson Region, Virginia. He centered the grandparents in The Waltons on his maternal grandparents, Colonel Anderson and Ora Lee Gianniny, and devised the show’s name by slightly modifying the name of his paternal grandfather, Walter Clifton Hamner. Richard Thomas was among the celebrities of Hamner’s tv series, The Waltons.
