Clarence Williams Sr.

Jazz designer and entrepreneur who also produced early recordings by Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, and Irene Scruggs, amongst others. His early years had been spent performing unusual jobs like glowing sneakers, but by 1910, he was producing a name for himself in New Orleans. He and Armand J. Piron, a violinist and bandleader, founded the best African-American-owned music posting company from the 1920s. He wedded Eva Taylor, a popular blues vocalist, stage celebrity, and collaborator, in 1921. He and W.C. Handy toured collectively for a limited period of time.
