Though she actually is most widely known for her part as Nettie Fowler in the 1st Broadway creation of Rodgers’ & Hammerstein’s Carousel, this music theater performer also had a career like a contralto using the Metropolitan Opera. After graduating from senior high school, she qualified in the Nashville Conservatory of Music and consequently began her performing career as an area radio performer. In the first 1940s, she became the youngest Metropolitan Opera vocalist to possess ever taken for Erda in the Richard Wagner opera Das Rheingold. After closing her Broadway and Metropolitan Opera professions, she resolved in her hometown of Owensboro, Kentucky; wedded a physician called Robert Smith; and elevated daughters called Nancy and Robin. At one stage, she was the performing coach of celebrity Florence Henderson.
