Greatly influential jazz saxophonist through the Big Band era. He released memoirs, including IN THE EVENT THAT YOU Know of an improved Life, Please Inform Me. He began in the Austin SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Gang in 1922 and transferred to NEW YORK to help expand his profession. He composed a ballad known as ‘Zen is normally When,’ that was played with the Dave Brubeck Quartet in 1964. He was created and elevated in Chicago, and finished up time for live there in his later years. He released many recordings, including “The Eel,” “Tillie’s Downtown Today,” “Crazeology,” “The Buzzard,” and “IN A SHORT TIME,” which were constructed with Benny Goodman.
