Australian director whose best-known films included Soft Mercies from 1983, Traveling Miss Daisy from 1989, and Dark Robe from 1991. He produced his debut feature film The Activities of Barry McKenzie in Australia in 1970. More than the next a decade, he became a well known Australian movie director, and his popularity allowed him to break right into Hollywood in the first 1980s. He was nominated for any Best Movie director Oscar for his 1st Hollywood film, Sensitive Mercies.
