She spent 2 yrs learning in Russia on United kingdom Council scholarships in 1977 and 1982. She talks fluent Russian and interviewed Russian head Vladimir Putin live in the Kremlin for the 2011 webcast. She wedded tv journalist Nick Worrall in the first 1990s however they afterwards divorced. She hosted a meeting for the BBC with previous Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.
