Award-winning jazz musician, receiver of the 1968 NEA Jazz Experts Award and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987. He was mainly self-taught and collaborated with a multitude of musicians before attaining notoriety in Harlem. He trained workshops and workshops at many institutions, including Harvard and Princeton School. He wedded his first wife in 1925, but she passed away from pneumonia immediately after; another three finished in divorce. He and his 5th wife, Hilma Ollila Arons, wedded in 1979. Among Duke Ellington’s trumpeters was Carter’s principal source of motivation when he was developing up and developing his abilities.
