Albert Hastings Markham

Royal Navy officer who designed the brand new Zealand flag and participated within an 1876 expedition towards the North Pole. He became a member of the Royal Navy at age group fifteen and spent another eight years involved in fighting the pirates around China. While stationed in Australia, he developed the thought of using the Southern Combination constellation following the the Union Combination for New Zealand’s flag. His grandfather William Markham was the Archbishop of York. Henry Morton Stanley was another well-known Uk explorer.
