His publication, A Naturalist in Alaska, gained the John Burroughs Medal in 1963. He was motivated to spend his lifestyle to the analysis of plant life and animals following a stop by at the Support McKinley Country wide Recreation area in Alaska. In the 1950s he led the opposition to some proposed highway along with a visitor hotel in the inside of Support McKinley Country wide Recreation area. His half-brother Olaus aimed the Wilderness Culture, and championed with him the passing of the Wilderness Action. The Arctic Country wide Animals Refuge, which he helped set up, was later backed by congressmen like Colorado Senator Tag Udall.
